Concrete work we do in Hoover, AL

A&B Hoover Concrete Construction builds concrete for homes and businesses in Hoover, AL, and every one of the 16 services below rests on the same rule. Concrete holds up only as well as the ground under it and the path the water takes. That goes for flatwork, the flat pours like driveways, patios, walks and floors, and for walls, steps, footings and foundations too. Your price moves mostly with the size of the job, how much digging and base work the ground needs and the finish you pick. The schedule turns on permits and inspections, the prep and the cure, which is the stretch when fresh concrete hardens before it takes weight. The estimate at your place is where you get your own numbers.

  • Concrete driveway building

A new driveway starts with the ground. We dig out and pack the base, slope it so water runs off toward the street, then pour the slab.

  • Concrete patio construction

Want a spot out back for a grill and chairs? We build concrete patios that look level to the eye but pitch rain away from your house.

  • Stamped concrete services

Stamped concrete gives a patio, walk or pool deck the look of stone, brick or slate, pressed and colored into the fresh pour, with one solid slab underneath.

  • Concrete sidewalk building

Tired of stepping over a heaved or broken walk? We pour new sidewalks and front walks on a packed base, with joints cut so cracks land where we choose.

  • Garage floor concrete

A garage floor carries cars, tools and the odd oil drip, so we pour it thick enough for the load, smooth enough to sweep, and pitched toward the door.

  • Decorative concrete

Decorative concrete covers color, exposed aggregate that shows the stone in the mix, and custom borders, for homeowners who want more than plain gray on a patio, walk or entry.

  • Concrete retaining walls

When a slope keeps washing into the yard, a poured concrete retaining wall holds the soil back, with drainage behind it so water doesn't push it over.

  • Concrete floor installation

We pour interior concrete floors for basements, shops, sheds and commercial spaces, set on a prepared base and finished flat so flooring or equipment sits true.

  • Concrete pool decks

Wet feet need grip, so our pool decks get a broom finish, fine grooves dragged across the top, and a slope that sheds splash away from the pool.

  • Concrete steps construction

Front steps sinking or pulling away from the house? We form and pour new concrete steps with even rises and treads, set on a solid footing.

  • Slab foundation building

For a new house, addition, garage or outbuilding, we build the slab foundation it stands on, with the ground packed, the edges thickened and steel placed throughout.

  • Foundation installation

Building from the ground up? We dig, form and pour foundations for homes and commercial buildings, including the footings and walls that carry the structure above.

  • Concrete parking lot building

We build concrete parking lots for businesses, churches and apartment buildings, thick enough for steady traffic and graded so rain runs off instead of pooling.

  • Concrete footings

Footings are the wide concrete base under a wall, porch, deck post or addition. We dig to firm ground and pour so the load above stays put.

  • Foundation raising

Doors sticking or brick cracking as one corner of the house settles? Foundation raising lifts the settled section back toward level and sets it on firmer support.

  • Concrete cutting

We saw-cut concrete for new doorways, plumbing trenches, driveway widenings and clean removal, and we cut control joints in fresh slabs so cracks follow a straight line.

Why people hire us for their concrete work

Good concrete on bad ground won't hold up. So we put our time into the parts you can't see, and we make sure you understand your own job before anything gets poured.

How your concrete job runs, start to finish

Here's what happens after you call or send the form, from my visit to your yard to the walk-through once the work is done.

  1. Call or send the form

Call (205) 325-9006 or use our contact page to tell us what you have in mind and where it is. We get back to you within one business day to set a time for me to come out, see the job in person and talk it over with you.

  2. Walk the site, get a quote

I walk the site with you and look at the ground, the slope and where the water runs now, because that decides how the base and drainage get built. Then you get a free estimate that spells out what's in it, with no pressure and no obligation to go ahead.

  3. Permits, base work and the pour

Once you're ready, we sort out the permit side with the building office and leave room in the plan for any inspections. Our own crew digs out and packs the base, sets the forms and steel, then pours and finishes the concrete, with me on the job the whole way.

  4. Final walk and cleanup

Before we pack up, we walk the finished work with you, answer any questions and clean up the site. We also go over the cure with you, so you know when the new concrete is ready for feet and when it's ready for a car.

Tell us about the concrete job you have in mind

Send it over and we'll get back to you within one business day to set a time for me to see the job. The estimate is free, done at your place, and comes with no obligation.

Concrete work in Hoover and the cities around it

Hoover is where we're based, and it's a city with plenty of green in it. Moss Rock Preserve covers 349 acres of forest, big rock outcroppings, streams and waterfalls, with nearly 12 miles of hiking trails, and Aldridge Gardens is known for its hydrangeas, including the Snowflake Hydrangea that became the city's official flower.

On Municipal Drive, the Hoover Recreation Center sits next to the public library and gives residents an indoor pool, a walking track and a gym. Out in the neighborhoods, our days are spent in driveways and backyards, pouring new drives that meet the street, patios out back, walks and front steps, plus slabs and foundations for new building. We do the same work in the cities nearby.

A&B Hoover Concrete Construction is based in Hoover, AL, and we work in Birmingham, Vestavia Hills and many of the cities around them. Below are the 12 cities with their own pages, and if yours isn't listed, give us a call and ask.

Questions about concrete work in Hoover

How much does a concrete driveway cost in Hoover, AL?

There's no honest number until we've seen the ground, because the price of your driveway comes from its size, its thickness, the steel inside it and how much base work it needs. Taking out an old slab, a tight spot for the concrete truck, or a stamped or colored finish all add to it. I'll give you a free estimate at your place that shows each piece.

Does a city permit add to the cost of concrete work in Hoover?

When a permit is called for, yes, and on the city's fee schedule a permit for work on an existing home runs $9.00 for every $1,000 of construction value plus $51.00, with a $60 minimum. The State of Alabama also adds a $20.00 flat fee to every residential permit. Work started without a permit is charged double the permit fee on a first offense, which is why we check before we schedule.

How long will I be without my driveway or patio during a concrete job?

The longest stretch is usually the cure after the pour, not the pour itself, because fresh concrete needs time to harden before it takes weight. You can walk on it well before you can drive on it. Tear-out, base work and any inspections add time on the front end, and I'll lay out the dates for your job when we set the pour.

Is A&B Hoover Concrete Construction licensed and insured?

Yes, we're fully licensed and insured, and the work is done by our own crew with me on the job. If you'd like to see proof of insurance before we start, ask for it when I come out for the estimate.

What happens when a concrete contractor comes out to give an estimate?

I come out myself, walk the site with you and look at the ground and where the water runs, because that decides how the base and drainage get built. I'm looking for soft or wet spots, a slope that runs toward your house, how the truck will reach the pour and whether old concrete has to come out. The estimate you get afterward lists what's included and what isn't.

Do you guarantee your concrete work?

Yes, our work is backed by our satisfaction guarantee. I'd still rather earn it up front with the ground work, because a slab on a well-packed base with the water headed the right way gives you fewer reasons to call.

Will my new concrete slab crack like the old one did?

Concrete can crack, but a well-built slab cracks less and in the places we planned, because the base is packed and the control joints, grooves cut into the top, give a crack a straight line to follow. Most bad cracking we see comes from a base that was raked level instead of dug out and packed, water running under the slab, or joints cut late or skipped. Rebar, steel bars set inside the slab, helps hold the pieces together if a crack does open.

Do I need a permit for concrete work in Hoover, AL?

Your job may need one, because the City of Hoover requires a building permit before construction work starts on a home, including new construction, additions and outside remodels. The city's Inspection Services takes residential questions at permits@hooveralabama.gov or 205-444-7522, and any work that cuts or replaces a city street, curb or sidewalk, like widening where your driveway meets the street, needs a separate street-cut permit. Tell me about the job at the estimate and we'll find out what yours needs.
