Should your new house in Hoover sit on a slab or a crawlspace?

Foundation installation in Hoover is the concrete base we build under a new house or addition. It's usually a slab on grade, poured right on the packed ground, or a crawlspace, which holds the floor up on walls over a shallow open space.

Most folks call us with house plans in hand or an addition in mind, on a lot that's still mostly dirt, and the first question is what goes under it. The price turns on the size of the footprint, whether it's a slab or a crawlspace, how much digging and fill the ground needs, and how water runs across your lot. The schedule turns on the permit, the weather on pour day and the city's checks once the foundation is in. If a plain slab is what you're after, our slab foundation building page goes deeper, and the estimate I write after walking your lot spells out what's in it, so you can see your own figure.

How can you tell your lot needs work before the foundation goes in?

How we handle foundation installation, start to finish

It starts with the choice of foundation. I help you weigh a slab against a crawlspace for your build, with cost and ease of building on one side and getting to your pipes later and keeping moisture out on the other. Once that's settled, we dig out the soft topsoil and pack the subgrade, the ground the foundation sits on, so it holds the weight instead of sinking with the dirt. We set the forms and tie in rebar, the steel that holds the concrete together when it wants to crack, and we pour early in the day because midday heat leaves a weak, dusty top. After the pour we let it cure, the slow hardening that gives concrete its strength, and we grade the fill around it so water runs away from the house. If something has to give in the budget, I'll steer you away from cutting the base, because it's hidden on day one and it's the one part you can't fix later without starting over.

A crawlspace or an addition usually sits on concrete footings, the wide strips of concrete under the walls that spread the house's weight, and we pour those as part of the job. If the new building is a shop or office that needs a concrete parking lot, we can build that too and grade the two together.

  • Slab on grade

Suits a house where you want a simpler, lower-cost build with the floor close to the ground. The catch is that the plumbing runs under the concrete, so those lines need careful planning before we pour.

  • Crawlspace

Suits owners who want room to get under the house later for pipes, ducts and repairs. It takes more to build, and the space has to stay dry, which starts with how we grade the lot.

  • Foundation for an addition

Suits a room, garage or porch added onto a house you already have. We match the new foundation to the old one and keep water from running into the seam between them.

What happens after you call about a new foundation in Hoover?

From the first call to the last walk-through, here's how a foundation job runs with us and where the city's checks fit in.

  1. Call or send the form

Call (205) 325-9006 or fill out the form, and we'll get back to you to set a time for me to come see the lot. It helps to have the lot address, the house size and whether it's a new home or an addition handy.

  2. Walk the lot with me

I walk the site with you, look at the ground and where the water runs, and talk through slab or crawlspace for your plans. The estimate I put together spells out what's in it, from the digging and base work to the steel and concrete, so you can see where the money goes before you decide anything.

  3. Permits first, then the pour

Once you're ready, we sort out the permit side with the building office and set the pour date around it. Because the city has to sign off after the foundation is in, I leave that pause in the schedule so your framers aren't caught waiting.

  4. Walk the finished foundation

Before we pack up, we walk the finished foundation with you and look at how the ground falls away from it. You'll see what we built and what to keep an eye on while the house goes up.

Why Hoover homeowners call A&B Hoover Concrete Construction for foundations

On a new foundation, the ground and the water count for more than anything poured on top of them, so the first step is getting me out to see your lot. Ask for an estimate or call (205) 325-9006.

Foundations, site prep and drainage on Hoover lots

On a Hoover lot waiting for a residential building permit, the only work the city allows is erosion control, the silt fence and similar measures that keep dirt from washing off the lot, and the city has to approve those before it issues the permit. So we get them in and approved first, and digging for the foundation comes after. If your lot sits in a special flood hazard area, the city also requires a Floodplain Development Permit, and I'd rather we find that out on the first site walk than after the forms are set.

The state's geological survey lists heavy weight at the ground surface and drainage problems among the causes of sinkhole collapse, and a new house puts a lot of weight in one spot. We're based in Hoover and work in Birmingham and many of the cities around it, and I check where the water goes before anybody digs, the same as on jobs in Vestavia Hills and Pelham.

Questions about foundation installation in Hoover

What is the best way to choose between a slab and a crawlspace for a new house in Hoover?

Weigh an easier, lower-cost build against how you'll reach your pipes and ductwork later and how you'll handle moisture. Housing researchers in Pennsylvania list cost, ease of building and energy efficiency in a slab's favor, with limited utility access and moisture and radon concerns against it. Their crawlspace guide adds that a crawlspace lets heating and cooling equipment sit in a space that can be conditioned and lets plumbing run the usual way instead of under the concrete.

How much does a new house foundation cost in Alabama?

A new-construction foundation pour for a typical 2,000-square-foot house in Alabama usually runs about $8,500 to $21,500 per house. That's the going range across the state, not our price, and your own number comes from your lot and your plans. The estimate I put together after walking your lot spells out what's in it.

Do I need a permit to put in a foundation in Hoover?

Yes, the City of Hoover requires a building permit before any construction work starts, whether you're a homeowner, a business owner or a contractor. The city's Building Inspections Department also has to inspect and approve the work. Before we schedule anything, we check with the building office for your address, handle the paperwork when a permit is called for and leave room in the plan for the inspections.

What happens after the foundation is poured on a new house in Hoover?

The city requires a certified survey once the foundation is in, for all new construction and any work that changes a building's footprint, and rough inspections wait until the city approves it. Work should stop until then, so plan on a pause before framing moves ahead. I build that pause into the schedule from the start so nobody's caught off guard.

How do I keep water away from a new foundation?

Keep the ground sloping away from the house, and top it up when it sinks. Kansas State extension guidance notes that the soil filled back in beside a foundation often settles and can reverse the slope, sending water toward the house, and it advises adding fill to keep the slope running away. We grade the fill away from the house when we finish, and it's worth walking the edges after the first few heavy rains to look for low spots.

What should I ask a foundation contractor in Alabama before work starts?

Ask whether they work under the Alabama Home Builders Licensure Board, which covers building, remodeling, repairing or improving a home when labor and materials run over $10,000. A residential home builder also has to tell you in writing, before work starts, whether it carries liability insurance, and that disclosure is signed by both of you and attested by a witness you choose.
